Peanut the viral pet squirrel, beloved by social media followers, was seized and euthanized by New York’s DEC, sparking debates over wildlife laws and pet ownership.

Peanut the squirrel, an Instagram-famous pet with over 500,000 followers, has tragically been euthanized after being seized by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). His owner, Mark Longo, expressed heartbreak and frustration in a recent Instagram video, recounting the unexpected raid and seizure. According to Longo, officials arrived at his Elmira home on October 30, saying they were concerned about the risks associated with keeping wildlife as pets.
Longo rescued Peanut seven years ago after he found the baby squirrel injured on the side of the road. The two formed a close bond, and after unsuccessful attempts to reintroduce Peanut to the wild, Longo decided to care for him permanently. Peanut quickly became a social media sensation, drawing fans for his playful personality and interactions with Longo. However, it was the same online popularity that led to Peanut’s seizure, with public complaints sparking an investigation by the DEC.
The DEC defended its actions, claiming multiple reports from the public raised concerns about Peanut’s safety and potential rabies risks. During the seizure, Peanut allegedly bit one of the investigators, prompting officials to test him for rabies, which required euthanasia. This incident left Longo devastated and without closure, as he publicly mourned the loss of his beloved pet, calling the situation “heartbreaking.”
In response, Longo launched a GoFundMe campaign and a petition to raise awareness and seek legal reforms regarding New York’s wildlife ownership laws. He hopes to garner support for his non-profit organization, P’Nut’s Freedom Farm, which he established to honor Peanut and advocate for fair treatment of animals.
