YouTube Tests New Homepage That Hides Video Upload Date and View Count

This change is part of the platform's ongoing tweaks to its design

YouTube is testing a new layout that removes video upload dates and view counts. This change is part of the platform's ongoing tweaks to its design. In the past, YouTube has made other significant changes, such as removing the dislike button in 2021 to combat harassment, a move that faced considerable backlash.

On October 28, VidIQ reported on this new homepage layout, which shows videos with only their thumbnails, titles, and channel names. Normally, viewers can see the number of views and how long ago a video was uploaded, which helps them decide between similar videos.

Reactions to the potential change have been mixed. One user commented, “View counts and dates matter in selecting between videos on the same topic,” emphasizing that these details are crucial for viewers and creators alike. Another user pointed out that recent videos are often more relevant, saying, “having a more recent video on a topic is really important.” A third user expressed concern about missing out on up-to-date information without the upload date.

Tech YouTuber Marques ‘MKBHD’ Brownlee also chimed in, advising YouTube to focus on its unique strengths rather than trying to mimic other platforms, stating, “Stop chasing Netflix and just be YouTube.”

In response to the feedback, YouTube Liaison Rene Ritchie tweeted on October 29 that his team is looking into the reported changes and will provide updates soon.

Interestingly, some users support the removal of these features, suggesting it could help creators by encouraging viewers to explore videos regardless of their view counts. This discussion shows the diverse opinions within the YouTube community about what features enhance the platform.
